A header tank (or feed and expansion tank) is common to all vented hot water and central heating systems. It can be used to keep the system topped up with water and it can take up any expansion in system fluid as a result of water heating up.

Copper header tanks are arguably better suited for use on systems where the water can become very hot - such as in thermal stores, solid fuel systems or in systems where the heat source is hard to control.

Often, boiler stoves used in open vented systems require these high temperature header tanks. The vent pipe from the boiler stove goes into the top of the feed and expansion tank. If, for some reason, the system overheats, the resulting steam vents safely into the header tank. The tank can potentially get very hot, in some cases above 100ºC. Should a plastic tank become soft and potentially spill the contents this would be extremely dangerous, so why take the risk? We can supply header tanks with a high temperature tolerance, made from copper, which are insulated as well to decrease the chance of them freezing in a loft. The header tank comes with a lid as well as a fitted copper ball valve and brass arm.
